While I haven't lost faith in Justin Fields, many others have started discussing who should be under center for the Bears in 2024. I think the Bears should move on from the current coaching staff before they move on from Justin Fields. With that being said, here are five quarterbacks we could see playing in the Windy City in 2024.
5. Michael Penix Jr. (Washington)
The 23-year-old quarterback has been lighting up opponents so far in 2023 after having a massive 2022 season where he amassed 4641 yards. 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. So far in the young season, Penix has 1332 yards, 12 touchdowns, and only one interception while leading Washington to a 3-0 record after their most recent win against Michigan State. While Penix looks like a baller, he does come with a history of injuries. In his time at Indiana, Penix suffered four season-ending injuries but he has been healthy in his time at Washington.
4. Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals)
This is by far the most controversial quarterback that will be listed because we don’t know how Kyler will come back from the torn ACL he suffered in 2022. For a mobile quarterback, a torn ACL can change how they play since it could cause them to lose some of their mobility. In his injury-shortened 2022 campaign, Murray finished with 2368 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions along with 418 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The reason this is a controversial name is due to Murray recently signing a massive contract extension with the Cardinals, making his 2024 cap hit $51 million.
3. Caleb Williams (USC)
I don’t think the Bears finish 2023 in a position to land Williams which is the reason he is not higher than the next two guys. Since being appointed the starting QB at Oklahoma during his freshman year he has shown why he will be the first player taken in the 2024 NFL Draft. In three games, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner has totaled 878 yards, 12 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Recently. Caleb Williams and his father have come out and said he will stay at USC if the organization with the first pick isn’t the right fit.
2. Shedeur Sanders (Colorado)
One of the most exciting quarterbacks that could declare for the 2024 NFL Draft is Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders who is also the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders. At Jackson State, Sanders was putting up massive numbers that many didn’t think would translate to Colorado and the Pac-12. Following Colorado’s win against Colorado State Shedeur has shown no change in his ability as a collegiate quarterback. So far in three games, Shedeur has totaled 1251 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one interception.
1. Justin Fields
Has Justin Fields struggled? Yes. Has he been developed incorrectly by the current coaching staff? Also yes. Before we throw Fields away and ruin another young quarterback how about we get an actual coaching staff that can develop an offense, unlike Matt Eberflus. Justin Fields has shown flashes that he can be a franchise quarterback, but somehow the current regime coached out his aggressiveness and have limited his running ability to only three yards in week two. I don’t think it’s fair to show Fields the door quite yet because he has been put in a position that any quarterback would fail in.
