5 Takeaways Following the Bears Embarrassment in Kansas City

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Stop me if I’ve said this before, but the Chicago Bears spent their Sunday getting embarrassed although this time was at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes and Kansas City started slow but were able to build a pretty nice lead at the half as they were up 34-0 and ended up winning 41-10. The Bears defense left a lot of “Blank Space” for Travis Kelce.

I’ll spare you all of the details of the loss and just give you my five takeaways, three more than the Bears defense has this season, following this game.

1. It’s time to end the Justin Fields experiment

No fanbase has been fiending for a franchise-altering quarterback nearly as much as Bears fans have since the turn of turn of the century. Every single Bears fan thought Justin Fields would be the savior of Chicago and turn everything around, but that hasn’t been the case as we continue his third NFL season.

Somehow Justin Fields doesn’t know what open is in the NFL and he has no sense of an internal clock. With no signs of clear development, 13 consecutive losses, and an embarrassment of an offensive scheme it seems like it’s time to pull the plug on Justin Fields as the Bears quarterback.

I’m not saying to bench Fields unless they lose the next two or three then I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing what Tyson Bagent can do. I’m simply saying it’s time to scout the 2024 quarterback class even heavier than before.

2. Matt Eberflus is a fraud

Since being hired as Chicago Bears head coach, Matt Eberflus has done nothing but talk and provide zero backup to the things he says. I never thought it could be worse than Marc Trestman being the coach of the Bears until today.

In his 20 games as the head coach of the Bears, Eberflus somehow found a way to lose 17 of those games which is easily the worst start anyone has had as the head coach of the Bears. Since Eberflus has taken over, the Bears have been the worst offense and defense in the NFL another feat that hasn’t been achieved by the Bears in a long time. It seems like Eberflus’ H.I.T.S principle is more of a S.H.I.T principle.

To go on the radio after that loss and say “We’re going to focus” after that loss is such a slap in the face to the players and the fanbase that it’s pathetic.

3. There is no hope left for 2023

After yesterday it is clear that we can’t have any hope for the rest of the season, but come March we will buy into another offseason where the Bears spend money and build hype about it being “a new team.”

Justin Fields used the Lions starting at 1-6 in 2022 as a way to keep optimism for the next 14 games. Newsflash, the Bears have gotten worse each game they have played this year.

If you want to have actual hope for anything their name is USC quarterback Caleb Williams and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. At this rate the Bears are going to end up with two top-four picks and likely could pick at one and two next April.

4. The secondary has no durability

Heading into the game, the Bears were without Eddie Jackson and Kyler Gordon due to injury. Within the first half, the Bears lost Tyrique Stevenson, Jaylon Johnson, Jaquan Brisker, and Josh Blackwell for some period of time.

Playing against Patrick Mahomes with your second and third-string secondary will never be successful and week three proved that.

You can’t win football games if half of your starting defense is in the locker room for some reason or another while having the worst pass rush in the entirety of the NFL.

5. Everyone from top to bottom needs to be held accountable

From George McCaskey to Travis Homer, everyone should look in the mirror and ask themselves “what do I do good?” For most of them, the answer will be “nothing” because many of them wouldn’t see the field let alone be on a roster anywhere else.

The only person in the organization who gets a pass from me is Kevin Warren since he just got hired by the team, George McCaskey on the other hand has been pitiful since being promoted to Bears chairman. Since he took over, the Bears have had one winning season while winning zero playoff games. You can keep reeling in the loyal fans, but you will absolutely lose the younger fans who haven’t had the diehard fan instilled in them.

The way the Bears have played the first three weeks is both an embarrassment to George Halas and the city of Chicago. Everyone on this roster has played piss poor and makes it seem like they don’t care what they do on the field.

We make fun of teams like the Lions and Browns by saying things like “Same old Lions” or “Same old Browns,” but the truth is it’s the same old Bears until something changes.

The Bears haven’t hit rock bottom yet and I’m not sure we’ll see rock bottom anytime soon.
